A little history of how Cardinal Bakery began. Joe Politano became a baker’s apprentice in Italy at 11 years of age. In 1966, his family relocated to Long Island, New York and he continued to work in the baking industry, advancing to plant manager for a multi million dollar bread company, supervising over 100 people. In July 1984, after speaking with a friend who had been living in the Northern Virginia area for 8 years, Joe relocated his family to Leesburg Virginia. There was a demand for quality bread products and Joe and his friend hoped to open a bread manufacturing company to fill this demand. In October of 1985, they finally had the financing required to establish their own bakery. Within a year the partnership was dissolved and Joe’s brother Frank Politano joined the business.
From a humble beginning on Davis Drive in Sterling, Virginia Cardinal Bakery, Inc started producing quality bread products. In June 1990, Cardinal Bakery began the relocation of its facilities to Beaumede Corporate Park in Ashburn, Virginia. The new location allowed easy access to all of Northern Virginia and was an ideal location facilitating the bakery’s distribution of bread products. The new warehouse/office space would allow Cardinal Bakery room for expansion. In the years that followed Joe’s sister Maria Raso came on board to run the packing department.
With the addition of equipment, delivery trucks, and an ever growing work force, the demand for the bakery’s distinguished bread products soon overwhelmed the production facility.
In January of 1992, the Bakery relocated again to its current facility. This new facility was designed to handle future expansion. Joe remained very involved with maintaining the standard of quality that he demanded. Joe’s son Mike joined the bakery in 2000 to learn the business. Cardinal Bakery prides itself on maintaining a great crew of long term employees some of which have been employed for 15 years and more.
In October of 2005 Cardinal Bakery Inc. celebrated 20 years in business. Cardinal Bakery has established its reputation based on the finest quality, fresh baked products, with six day a week delivery. In the past 20 years the bakery has expanded its deliveries to include Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC making them a truly metropolitan DC area business.
Currently Joe Politano is the president of the company, overseeing all of the day to day operation of the bakery. Frank Politano is the vice president, maintaining the financial and technological aspects of the business. Mike Politano has grown in to the position of Sales representative and also runs the distribution department. Maria Raso is spearheading the Packing department. Making Cardinal Bakery a truly family owned and operated business.
